SBNM Conestoga wagon gets a makeover

Posted: Updated:

A historic piece of the Scotts Bluff National Monument is back, just in time for tourist season.
The Conestoga wagon reappeared on the monument grounds Wednesday.

The wagon was sent away to Warner Wagon works in Kansas earlier this year for restoration and repair.

Park Ranger Lesley Gaunt says 40 years of cold winters and hot summers weathered the wagon and it needed a little refurbishing.

She says its now back in top-notch shape, and adds real-life history back to the Monument.
"They've painted the traditional colors of red spokes and the blue body and then with the white cover on it makes it the patriotic red, white and blue. So many of the wagons you would have seen coming across the prairie would have been these colors. Although this is really brand spanking new looking!"
Gaunt says Warner Wagon Works was able to salvage much of the original iron works on the wagon, but a good amount of the wood had to be replaced.
