A Scottsbluff man accused of forging checks and making them payable to himself  is facing serious charges in Scotts Bluff County.

Police say that 27-year-old Joseph R. Aguilar wrote checks in the amount of $1,600, $550, and $1,700. He had gotten the checks by taking them from his girlfriend's grandfather.

Earlier this month, the victim noticed the discrepancies and contacted the Sheriff's Department. Court documents say that Aguilar admitted that he had written 4 or 5 checks to himself.

Investigators arrested Aguilar earlier this week on the charges of 2nd Degree Forgery (more than $1,000 aggregated), and Theft by Taking (More than $1,500)- both Class III Felonies.

Aguilar will be arraigned on the charges this morning in Scotts Bluff County Court.
