Community mourns loss of "brothers" who died in Memorial Day Weekend swimming death

Posted: Updated:
People across the region are shocked about the tragic death of two young men who died in a Sunday night swimming accident at Lake Minatare.

Cousins 19-year-old Dylan Peters and 23-year-old Chris Romey were swimming between two islands on the north side of the lake. It is unknown at this point why they were not able to make it across, but Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner says drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the drowning. Their bodies were found in a shallow area about six feet deep at the lake.

The news of the deaths shook many in the area. Dylan's mother Terresa Romey says that Dylan and Chris were cousins by blood, but brothers by heart. They were described as being adventurous and always looking for a good time.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the incident.

The death of Peters is especially poignant this Memorial Day Weekend, as he was a soldier with the 1057th Transportation Division of the Nebraska Army National Guard. Earlier this month he was promoted to the rank of Specialist.
