Former Mitchell teacher sentenced to 2-5 years in prison

Posted: Updated:
38-year-old Richard Cobos was sentenced to no less than 24 months, but no more than 60 months in prison in Scotts Bluff County Court Wednesday morning.

Cobos was convicted last month of third degree sexual assault of a child.

Jurors found Cobos guilty following a two-day trial, where a now 14-year-old girl said Cobos inappropriately touched her during the summer of 2012.

Cobos previously taught math at Mitchell Junior High school, authorities say the girl involved in the case was not a student.

Cobos stood trial on similar charges this month in Morrill county, but he was acquitted of the first degree assault charges.
