New petting zoo, Heritage Barn, and playground now open at Riverside Discovery Center

Posted: Updated:

Its the zoo's biggest construction project in ten years, and on Wednesday morning, it officially opened to the public.
A ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony was held for the Riverside Discovery Center's new Heritage Barn, playground, and petting zoo.

The 27,000 square foot Heritage Barn will feature an interactive classroom and historical pieces that will let children learn and discover about nature.

The barn will also house the new petting zoo, a space where visitors can pet and feed animals like sheep, goats, and even a llama.

Riverside Discovery Center Executive Director, Anne James, says the project has been many years in the making.
"We thought about doing this since 1993, to have a circular path through the zoo, have a place where kids can get in with the animals, and pet the animals, and so this has been the biggest construction project since 1993 here at the zoo, and we're very excited."
The zoo will also be unveiling a new project next year, an interactive sandbox where kids can dig for dinosaur bones.
