Gering council approves new Student Resource Officer for Gering schools

Posted: Updated:

A police presence will soon be more prominent in a KOTA Territory school district.

The Gering City Council approved a new position within the police department Monday night, for a new School Resource Officer.

The SRO will be a full-time officer that will spend nine months at Gering Public Schools.

Gering Freshman Academy Assistant Principal, Kraig eyrich, says the SRO will give an increased perception of safety in schools, which is becoming increasingly important.

He says the SRO will also provide a positive role model for students, and allow them to see police in a more positive light.

"One of the goals of this program is to incorporate the SRO into our elementary schools to do some presentations, and start getting that trust with the younger kids at that point. Also, at the junior high and high school we also have some different needs."

Officers say they expect to hire the SRO from within, and plan to have the new officer in schools by October 1st.
