Edible bean planting season almost complete

Posted: Updated:
KOTA Territory farmers are near the end of planting dry edible beans and some say the overall process has been a good one this season.

Gene Kizzire, a farm manager with the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center, says planting conditions have been pretty nice in the valley.

He says a few rain showers last week slowed the process a bit but since then about 80 percent of beans have been planted.

Kizzire says once beans start emerging farmers will then spray post-emergent herbicides to control weeds.

"Controlling weed pressures and irrigating is the next process through the growing season and by late August, September we'll start our bean harvest and delivering them to town for market," said Kizzire.

Farmers are expected to finish planting beans by the end of this week.
