Safety workshops aimed toward young farmers and ranchers

Posted: Updated:
Forbes has ranked farming and ranching number nine on their list of ten most dangerous jobs.

Today, young farmers and ranchers from around the panhandle gathered to find out what to do to avoid injury on the job.

The University of Nebraska Extension Center is hosting a series of tractor safety workshops in an effort to prevent serious injuries out in the work field.

UNL Extension educator Sharry Nielsen says staying safe is all about the attitude farmers and ranchers have.

"Well, our basic reason for being here is to try and get these kids to have what we call a safety attitude...the idea that safety is important, that it costs money and time to be safe, so if they can think safety as they do their work, before they start working, that's really the goal," says Nielsen.

Tomorrow participants will have the opportunity to drive tractors on their own.
