UNL Extension plans centennial celebrations throughout western Nebraska

Posted: Updated:

Ag specialists in KOTA Territory are planning centennial celebrations in honor of the nation's cooperative extension centers.

Extension centers were established on May 8th in 1914 thanks in part to the Smith-Lever act. The act established cooperative extension through land-grant universities in partnership with federal, state and local governments.
To honor their existence, ag specialists across western Nebraska are hosting activities all summer long during county fairs and other special events.

This Saturday, June 14th at the Banner County school from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. there will be an ice cream social to celebrate Banner County's extension center.

"We've been here for 100 years and we're going to be around for the next 100 years and we're going to still be relevant and helpful to the clientele that we serve," said educator Jim Schild with the Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff.

Other counties plan to have centennial celebrations during the following dates:

Central Sandhills: events are planned for July 26 during the Thomas County fair barbecue; August 1st, at the Hooker County fair, after the livestock auction; August 15th at the Grant County fair, after the livestock auction.
