DNA testing in 1988 murder case to be conducted

Twenty items related to a 1988 double murder in Scotts Bluff County will undergo DNA testing within the next 30 days.

Attorney's for Jeff Boppre have been petitioning for years to prove the innocence of their client. In court documents filed Friday in Scotts Bluff County District Court, an order for DNA testing was signed by District Court Judge Randall Lippstreu.

Items that are being held as evidence in the murder of Richard Valdez and Sharon Condon include a boning knife, fingernail scrapings taken from Condon and Valdez, broken glass from a light bulb from the crime scene, suspected blood stains, among other items.

In the next 30 days, the custodian of evidence at the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Office shall send the evidence to Orchid Cellmark Laboratories in Dallas. Upon completion of the testing, Cellmarks shall publish a final report to the court and the parties detailing the results of all tests.

Boppre is currently serving two consecutive life sentences for the murders.
