2nd annual YMCA triathlon kicks off with a splash

55 athletes started their day swimming, biking and running around Scottsbluff for the second annual YMCA Sprint Triathlon on Saturday morning.
Participants swam 300 yards before biking 14 miles from the YMCA parking lot up to the Scotts Bluff National Monument and back. Once participants battled the howling winds up the monument they returned and finished off with a 5K run.
Fitness Director Lola Gonzales says the event reflects the YMCA's mission which focuses on living healthy through the mind, body, and spirit.

"The challenge behind some of these people is that they know that they're doing something healthy...our mission is health," says Gonzales.

This year's athlete to cross the finish line first was TJ Dredla. He says it was fun to be out in the scenery of Scottsbluff and enjoy the spirit of athletes.

"It was a tough bike, the wind was brutal going through the path but it was a great course this year and the Y put on a great triathlon...it was fun," he said.

17 panhandle cities were represented at today's event. Athletes traveled from North Platte and Casper, Wyoming to compete.
