Gering PD adds K9 to force

Members of the Gering police department have a new teammate on the force and are thanking community members for making the addition possible.
Dexter, a three-and-a-half year old Dutch shepherd all the way from Holland but was purchased by the department from New Market, Alabama.

K9 Officer Justin Brunz recently finished patrol training in Grand Island with Dexter earlier this month.

He says Dexter is trained to help with criminal apprehension, criminal detainment, and drug and evidence recovery.

Brunz says it wouldn't be possible for Dexter to be on the force without financial support from the community.
"Our K9 wouldn't be possible without the citizens and businesses in the area. Our dog was primarily bought with donations from the business and private citizens in the Gering-Scottsbluff area so we want to give a big thank you out to them for supporting us and getting us this new tool for the police department," said Brunz.
Brunz says both the Scottsbluff and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's department have their own K9s. He says it's nice to have one on the Gering department and not have to sometimes rely on the help of other K9 trainers from other departments in case of an emergency.

"That way we have a faster response when there are other department guys off and come assist us on their off time," said Brunz.

Dexter will continue drug and patrol training weekly to stay active.
