Pony Express rides through panhandle

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Mail rode into the panhandle today just as it would have in the 1800s, by horse back.

The Pony Express "re-ride" is making its way across the nation.

Commemorative letters and postage are traveling across the country in a mochilla mail carrier from Sacramento, California to St. Joseph, Missouri.

Pony Express riders made several stops in the panhandle this morning, to pass along the mochilla.

The riders were ahead of schedule Wednesday, and had time to stop for a special swearing-in ceremony in front of the Scotts Bluff National Monument visitor's center.

The riders have taken an oath to reenact the Pony Express as true as it would have run a hundred years ago.

The last rider is expected to gallop into St. Joseph, Missouri on Saturday.
