Wind causes ditch burning to get out of control north of Minatare

Posted: Updated:
Mother Nature helped cause a routine burn to get out of control Wednesday afternoon.

Around 4 p.m. the Minatare/ Melbeta Fire Department was dispatched to a fire near the intersection of County Road 29 and County Road J. Firefighters say the wind helped suck the flames out of a pivot pit where weeds were being burned.

The flames spread and caused grass and a tree to catch on fire. Assistant Fire Chief Jon Leider says the crews were able to get the fire contained in a short amount of time. "It's starting to get dry, and there's a lot of sheet grass," explains Leider. "It could happen very easily."

Leider adds that the property owner was burning as carefully as he could. As dry conditions continue, he urges people to be mindful of mitigating factors such as the wind.
