Diabetes care and healthy diet discussed at RWMC luncheon

Posted: Updated:
More than 400 people in the panhandle gathered in Gering to talk about diabetes awareness and healthy living.

On Wednesday, Regional West Medical Center held its quarterly health and wellness luncheon.

Diabetes Educator Marcia Bauer spoke to the audience about the connections between diabetes, weight gain and healthy dieting.

She says as a state 30 percent of Nebraskans suffer from diabetes but it's a bigger issue locally.

"We have probably close to 30 percent of our population with diabetes now unfortunately. A few years ago I think it was reported that Scottsbluff was in the top 10 for obesity and diabetes. The city of Scottsbluff...in the nation. That's not what we want," said Bauer.

Health experts at Regional West offer support groups, diabetes classes and pre-diabetic classes for people in the community wanting to learn more information.
