Locals take to their sneakers to raise autism awareness

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism.

Locals took to their sneakers this morning to raise awareness on the disorder.

Those who have been touched by autism, and even those who have not gathered this morning to walk for the disorder.

Organizer Jillian Gordon's son Tristan has autism and she says the idea came from seeing other autism walks around the country, but none in the panhandle area.

"I think it's pretty important," says Gordon. "I think it's a cause that really got swept under the rug for quite a few years and just to bring the awareness out into the community, bring parents out together and meet each other and maybe make a support group out of this and just play dates or something, just so more kids feel comfortable in their own environment."

Funds raised from this event will go to Autism Speaks and Bearcub preschool, where Tristan attends.
