Youth Chautauqua camp kicks off today

Posted: Updated:
Youth are being given the opportunity to become part of history all week at one local camp.

The Humanities Nebraska youth Chautauqua camp kicked off today.

The five–day camp gives fifth to ninth grade students a chance to research and write about historical characters. They then bring the characters to life as they take the stage during the 2014 Nebraska Chautauqua  festival.

Ann Birney with Ride Into History says that it is not a camp for youth only.

"We like to say that it's not youth development because it's keeping those stories alive," says Birney. "And it's also making the connections cross generation, so many of the young people here don't have those long family ties to the community, but it is their community."

The youth will put on a performance in costume this Friday.
