Minimum wage petition drive today

Posted: Updated:
Increasing minimum wage in Nebraska has been a hot topic since being brought to light.

Volunteers are holding a petition signing event today to give the public the opportunity to decide whether raising minimum wage goes on the ballot or not.

If it is placed on the ballot, the federal standard of $7.25 per hour will rise to $9.00 by 2016.

Scotts Bluff County Democratic party chair Jeff Leanna says it can be beneficial to many.

"We're doing a drive here at the office to encourage people to come in and sign the petition," says Leanna. "Besides the 87,000 signatures that they need statewide, there's also a requirement that we get signatures—at least 5% in 38 counties. So here in Scotts Bluff county, that would be almost 1,200 signatures."

The petition signature drive will continue tonight until eight at 1906 Broadway.
