Fireworks once again light a spark between Gering council, citizens

Posted: Updated:
Gering native Laurie Henkel approached council Monday night to ask the city place restrictions on the personal use of fireworks.

Henkel says many people and animals in the city are disrupted by the loud booms of fireworks, and asked the city among other things, to limit the time period people are allowed to shoot them off.

The council informed Henkel the 11-day firework allowance is set by the state, and they cant alter it.

Henkel also suggested the city control the discharge of fireworks by designating one area in the city for people to light them off, but council responded this would cause injuries, and people enjoy lighting fireworks off near their home.

Council member Justin Allred says the council has had many discussions and meetings on the firework issue, and has yet to make any changes to city ordinances.

"I do agree that maybe we need to do a little stricter enforcement on the time limits, because I too agree that it goes on beyond 10 o'clock, and its not supposed to. And that's one area that we can do better," said council member Larry Gibbs. "But beyond that I'm not sure there's really much we can do."
