Public urged to attend VA Hot Springs meeting in Gering tonight

Posted: Updated:
A local veterans service officer is asking veterans to attend an open meeting about the VA Hot Springs closure plan.

The meeting will be held at the Gering Civic Center on Wednesday, June 25 at 7 p.m.

There was an open meeting Tuesday night in Chadron and a majority of people there were opposed to closing of the VA medical center.

Part of the proposed plan looks to replace the center with a walk–in clinic and increase contracting for services from regional health care providers.

John Brehm, Scotts Bluff County and Banner County Veterans Service Officer, says the closure will not only affect veterans but people in the community. He says he would like to see veterans and locals pack the civic center tonight.

"I think they should come out to support the Hot Springs medical center. It's been there for many years. There for many years served a lot of veterans. I think, I'd like to see the hospital stay there. I really can't see what is going to be gained by what they're doing," said Brehm.
