Blood Donor Center in need of A and O blood types

Posted: Updated:
Supplies of type 'A' and type 'O' positive and negative blood are getting low in the Western Nebraska Blood Bank.

Staff at the Regional West Blood Donor Center say all blood types are welcome and needed, but those two types are particularly important.

"Right now, we're really low on both A positive and A negative, and O positive and O negative. So we put out a plea to the hospital, and they put it on Facebook,' said lead Phlebotomist Julie Dahlinger. "We've gotten a great response, but we still haven't gotten back to you minimum capacity yet."

Dahlinger says donors with all blood types are encouraged to donate, but type A and O are especially needed.

"O neg is a universal donor, but its also only about six percent of the population," says Dahlinger. "And so since its a universal donor, it can be given to anybody. So like if we have a trauma its one of the first units that will be given until we know a blood type."

O positive is also a rarer variety Dahlinger says, with only 34 percent of the population as carriers.

Donors are able to donate every 56 days, and at Western Nebraska Blood Center, donating comes with its perks.

"I know I heard a lot of donors say they come in for our cookies, so one of our biggest perks are our cookies. So we give out those, and we also give out t-shirts if we ave them in."

Twice a year Great Lakes Airlines also offers two round-trip airline tickets out of Scottsbluff, Alliance or Chadron that donors are automatically entered to win.

But Dahlinger says the biggest 'perk' of donating blood should be knowing you're helping save lives.

"One unit of blood can save up to three lives," she says.

Those interested in donating can visit the Blood Donor Center at Regional West Medical Center, or call (308) 630-2477.
Donors will need to bring a picture ID, and parental consent if under 17 years of age. Donors also need to weigh at least 115lbs, and shouldn't have gotten any piercings or tattoos within the past year.
