Rotarian of Year honored in part to Kenya water project

Posted: Updated:
Rotarian's from all across the region convened on Cheyenne this past weekend for their district conference, with one member of the Scottsbluff/ Gering club coming home with top honors.

Joe Schon was awarded the Rotarian of the Year Award at the District 5440 Conference. More than 50 clubs from Wyoming, northern Colorado, and the panhandle are included in the district.

Schon was commended for his work on a mission trip to Kenya, after seeing schools had no clean water and decided to do something about it.

"And so far, we have put clean water with filters into 19 schools that serve 6,500 children," explains Schon.  "And so I'm going back there in two weeks, and we will finish that first phase of the project."

Schon says that he still has two more years on this project and there have been talks of expanding the program beyond Kenya into other third world countries
