Workshop offers old horse riding style to visitors

Posted: Updated:
Several riders are attending a horse workshop this weekend in Scottsbluff to learn the art of Californio style riding.

Workshop organizer Arlene Morgan says this style is based on control balance where the horse and rider work together.

She says the riding style dates back to when the Spanish came to California and settled in the area working with cattle.

She invited her friend, Bruce Sandifer, from California to teach riders the unique riding style.

Morgan says the lessons were well received.

"Looking at other styles and trying other styles and methods, this seems to be the softest and quietest way to work cattle and work with your horse instead of against him. To get a job done and you can also learn a lot with communication within yourself and your horses," she said.

Riders came from Montana, Colorado, South Dakota, New Mexico, Wyoming and Nebraska for the three-day workshop.
