Girl scouts lend their green thumbs to help senior citizens get back into gardening

A group of local girl scouts are lending their green thumbs to elderly folks in the area.

Members of Girl Scout Troop 10041 got down and dirty at The Residency Retirement Village Saturday.

The Troop is helping construct a garden for residents at the village.

Master gardener Connie McDonnough says the garden is designed higher in the air, so that it will be accessible for all residents at the village.

"We wanted to create a garden where individuals can garden regardless of their physical abilities, McDonnough said. "And by that, I mean we wanted to make it so that people in walkers or wheelchairs who are still ambulatory can still get out and garden."

Girl Scout Anna Ossian said she felt good knowing she was helping to create a garden that everybody can use.

"Its really fun to know the people are going to be able to enjoy this and access it easier instead of crawling on the ground and hurting their backs."
