Students at Bear Cub preschool score high on Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment

Posted: Updated:
Early childhood development has been a focus in the region for the past few years, and this week, new assessment results show how 3 and 4-year-olds are actually doing in several core areas.

The Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment results show most preschoolers at Bear Cub Preschool are meeting or exceeding expectations for most children of the same age or grade.

Teaching Strategies GOLD is an observation based assessment, used in conjunction with preschool curriculum.

The assessments evaluate students in the areas of cognitive, social emotional, physical, language, literacy, and mathematics.

Principal of Bear Cub Preschool, Frances Burkhalter says the results show that preschool is effective in providing a strong foundation for students to do well in their future schooling.

"So what really happens when we have children scoring, 90 percent of out children is what that means. 90 percent of our children are ready for pre-school at the end of that 4-year-old data. The 3-year-old data is saying that those children are ready for the four-year-old curriculum."

Bear Cub Preschool students’ spring scores in the following areas are as follows:

Three Year Olds:

Social Emotional: 90.3% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Language: 90.4% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Literacy: 87.1% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Mathematics: 64.6% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Physical: 74.2% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Cognitive: 64.5% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations

Four Year Olds:

Social Emotional: 91.2% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Language: 93% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Literacy: 94.7% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Mathematics: 81.7% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Physical: 96.5% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations
Cognitive: 96.5% of all students met or exceeded widely held expectations

The assessment system illustrates the predictable sequence of development and learning of most young children to ensure that all children, including those with disabilities, are making progress. For more information on these scores visit www.sbps.net/preschool.

Burkhalter says its thanks to the hard work of both the Bear Cub staff and preschooler's parents that students scored so high in the assessments.

"Our staff at the preschool is amazing. They have a firm understanding of what kids need, how to move them developmentally to the next stage, but I would also attribute it to our patents. Our parents do a great job of working with the teachers, supporting the school, and doing things at home with their kids to help get them from where they are to where they need to go."

This is the first year the teaching strategies gold assessment results have been released so Burkhalter says its too early to tell how local preschoolers rank with students in the rest of the state.
