Kimball woman sentenced in Social Security scam

Posted: Updated:
A 74-year-old Kimball woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to a charge of theft of government property.

Lois Powell has been sentenced to five years of probation and will have to pay more than $177,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors say that Powell had been defrauding the Social Security Administration since 1998. She had been receiving benefits that belonged to a deceased
friend after being added as a signor to that account.

When the friend passed away, Powell continued to receive and cash the checks for her own personal use.
