Johanns weighs in on immigration crisis

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of Central American children have been illegally crossing the U.S. border, turning Capitol Hill's focus on immigration reform.
During his weekly conference calls with reporters, U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says that since October, more than 52,000 children traveling alone have been apprehended by border patrol.

He adds that these children are then placed in shelters that were never intended to be long term homes.

This week, President Obama has said he plans to take a "go-it-alone" approach to tackle immigration reform, without working with House Republicans on the issue.
"This is causing a humanitarian crisis, and it's likely to grow," explains Johanns. "I'm joining with several of my colleagues in urging the president to clear the air with illegal entry into our country and to make sure that he clears the air with other countries."
Obama is blaming Republican resistance for not cooperating to tackle sweeping immigration legislation.
