Firefighters not as busy as expected on Fourth of July

Posted: Updated:
Fourth of July in the panhandle turned out to be less dangerous this year than firefighters had prepared for.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, the Fourth of July is one of the most dangerous holidays for fire–related injuries.

The Scottsbluff Fire Department was prepared for major and minor issues that could have occurred yesterday.

Firefighter Justin Houstoun says that last night went much better than they were expecting.

"Every year we always prepare for the worst and this year people listened to the safety tips, did safe practices with all the firework launches," says Houstoun. "Last night, we only had 3 fire related calls due to fireworks. We had 2 grass fires and one dumpster fire, but for the most part, everything went well."

Houstoun says they hope for the same come new years.
