Nebraska gets a new area code

Posted: Updated:
The state of Nebraska now has a new area code.

531 is the area code now being assigned to new phone numbers established in eastern parts of the state.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission was warned that 402 numbers are running out, with only 10 codes remaining.

The 531 area code will now be assigned to new numbers in the current 402 area code region.

The new 531 area code will be overlaid on top of the 402 area, so current 402 customers won't be forced to switch phone numbers, but all calls in the area will require the area code plus the seven-digit telephone number.

Phone numbers with a 308 area code will not be affected.

The process to initiate the new 531 area code began nearly 15 years ago, and the plan was to start assigning the new code once there were only a few 402 codes left.
