Scottsbluff columbarium project underway

Posted: Updated:
Scottsbluff city leaders are looking to complete a columbarium project in the next few months following a high demand for cremation burials.

The 80 space columbarium will be located at Fairview Cemetery on Fifth Ave and 42nd Street.

The city has already laid the concrete foundation for the project.

Assistant City Manager, Nathan Johnson, says people can purchase individual or family spaces with the city at an affordable price.

According to the city's website, burial spaces cost $300 for cremations and $550 for a full-size plot. There's also an additional $300 for opening, closing and maintaining the space.

Johnson says there's been a shift in demand for more cremation style burials and expects the first 80 spaces to fill up quickly.

"We've noticed that many of these cemeteries across the state, across the region are shifting to these columbariums to sort of appeal to these younger demographics who are looking at other options, taking more things into consideration, before doing a standard burial service," said Johnson.

The $60,000 dollar project is expected to be complete by the end of summer.
