American Red Cross teaches kids how to swim in Scottsbluff

Posted: Updated:

Kids in Scottsbluff are learning how to float, blow bubbles and much more during swim lessons with the American Red Cross.

For the next two weeks, city lifeguards are teaching basic lessons to about 30 kids.

Pool Manager Kerran Hessler says typically five-and-six-year-olds learn how to float during level one.

Older participants learn various techniques from arm strokes and diving to swimming laps.

Hessler, who has worked with the city for 26 years, says the swim classes are a life-long lesson but the most important lesson anyone can learn is floating.

"Once you learn to float you can pretty much figure things out. The more time people spend in the water, the better it is for them and the more they pick up on their own," said Hessler.

Anyone interested in swim lessons for kids can sign up until this Wednesday, July 9th.

Lessons are from 10:30 a.m. to 11:10 a.m or 11:15 a.m. to 11:55 a.m.
