Organizers prepare mud pits for OT Days volleyball competition

Posted: Updated:
Hundreds of gallons of water are being poured into the ground as organizers prepare for the Oregon Trail Days mud volleyball tournament this weekend in Gering.

Crews started filling four mud pits last week and will continue to do so before the start of games on Saturday morning.

Board member Rebecca Shields says she started the mud volleyball tournament three years ago and it's been growing ever since.

During its first year, the tournament started with 21 teams. The following year, 42 teams competed and this weekend 58 teams are expected to compete for trophies and other prizes. Shields says it will be a treat for spectators and other participants to watch teams play volleyball in the mud.

"There are so many awesome activities for all ages but this one is full of fun with friends and family it's a good time. You don't' have to be great at volleyball cause once you're in the mud everybody's at the same playing level," Shields said.

The tournament will start at 8 a.m. and last until 9 p.m. on Saturday at the Five Rocks Ampitheater in Gering.
