SB man accused of stabbing his girlfriend facing charges in District Court

The Scottsbluff man accused of stabbing his girlfriend will have his case tried in District Court.

23-year-old Michael Carrera appeared in Scotts Bluff County Court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on two felony charges.

Carrera is charged with second degree assault, a Class III Felony, and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, a Class II Felony.

The charges stem from a June incident where officers were dispatched to Regional West Medical Center in reference to a stabbing victim.

The victim was a woman claiming to be Carrera's girlfriend with a large arm wound and several leg lacerations.

Officers testified the woman gave conflicting accounts of how and where the stabbing occurred, but eventually admitted it was Carrera that caused the injuries.

Officers say the woman originally said the deep cut wound in her right arm was caused by Carrera holding the knife against her arm. Testimony says Carrera was holding the knife up against her, and she "heard a pop, then felt pain and blood dripping down her arm." But emergency room doctors say that story is not consistent with the wound, which had to have been caused by stabbing the arm rather than holding a knife up to it.

Officers say Carrera's girlfriend bought the knife involved in the stabbing earlier that day as a gift for Carrera.

Prosecutors argued despite conflicting reports from the woman, there is enough probable cause to have Carrera's case bound to District Court.

Carrera will be back in court on July 18th.

He is facing up to 75 years in prison of convicted of both charges.
