Safe Ride OT Days: No reason to drive home drunk

(308) 633-6397. Thats the phone number people need to save into their phones before they go out to celebrate Oregon Trail Days this weekend.

That number will get you a safe ride home Friday and Saturday if you've drank too much to drive.

The Safe Ride OT Days Project will have volunteer drivers standing by to offer free rides home to anyone who needs one.

"They can walk down to the Gering Citizen and get a ride from there," says project organizer Lisa Betz. "We'll also have teams of drivers that will be posted at the Union and some of the other watering holes that call s for rides."

Drivers will be out and about throughout the OT Days zone, and all people need to do is find a volunteer sporting a neon-green shirt to get a ride home.

Betz says the purpose of the project is to keep the roads safe, and there aren't any limitations to how far volunteers will drive to get people home.

"It's a valley-wide service and we will take people to Scottsbluff, to Mitchell, to Bayard, to Minatare. We've even taken people down to Torrington and to Lyman."

"As long as its home," Betz said. "We're got going to stop off at a fast-food restaurant or take someone to a party or back to the bar after they go home to change clothes. We've had some funny requests."

Betz says the rides are completely free, but tipping drivers is appreciated. "Its not a requirement, what's really important is we get people home safely."

Betz says none of this would be possible without the help of generous volunteers, and several local businesses that have donated their products and services.

"I was a little concerned at first about not finding enough volunteers, but after Scott and Carla Swanson offered volunteers a steak dinner, we have plenty of drivers now. I guess that says a lot about their steak dinners!"

Betz says in addition to the Gering Citizen, other businesses such as Detrich Distributing,Creative Signs, Logoz, and Pizza Hut have also helped out immensely.

Again, (308) 633-6397. Save it. Now.
