Gering accepting applications to fill Ward IV council vacancy

Posted: Updated:
There's a vacant seat in the Gering council chambers.

The Gering city council officially recognized the abrupt resignation of former council member Jill McFarland last night.

McFarland sent a letter to the city and citizens late last month stating she would not continue the last five months of her term on council, although McFarland's name is still on the November ballot along with longtime Gering resident Phil Holliday.

Holliday told council he is willing to step up and take McFarland's vacant seat early.

"With my business background as well as the time I spent on civic boards and organizations, couple wit living most of my life in the Gering area, I feel I’m a very qualified candidate and have the knowledge, experience, and desire to continue to move the city of Gering forward in a positive direction."

Mayor ed mayo and council decided not to immediately appoint Holliday to council, and instead decided to accept applications for the next week.

"Interested persons shall submit a letter explaining their interest in the position to the mayor by Wednesday, July 23, 2014," said City Clerk Kathy Welfl.

Interviews of prospective candidates will be conducted at the July 27th council meeting.

Mayor Mayo says he will appoint a new council following the interviews.
